Running time is 60 minutes for Act I, 50 minutes for Act II.
There are 24 songs including 4 reprises, with solos for 7 characters. Orchestration is for a piano or small combo (keyboard, drums, guitar, bass), but could be done with a full orchestra. Music is of various styles from ballad and soft-shoe to rock and jazz; there's even a techno-spiritual.
Cast: 18 or more as follows:
Hoova - male robot, late model
Emperor - male (35)
5 Crew - 2 male (50 and 25), 3 female (35, 25, and 25)
3 Satellites - female robots (can be done as offstage voices via speakers)
4 Robot chorus - (male or female robots), can add more if available
4 Minister chorus - (male or female), can add more if available
Robot waitress - female, can be shared with Minister role
Offstage voice - can be shared with above
Major settings are the space ship, the bar, the palace, the shuttlecraft, and space. There is action away from the main stage during transitions, facilitated by directed lighting.
Costumes are futuristic: robots, satellites, space uniforms, politician suits, and super villain cape.
ROBOT TROUBLE was first staged (as ROBOTS) by the MIT Musical Theatre Guild in November 1997. The current revision was given a reading by the Mt. Wachussett Community College Drama Circle in October 1999. In June 2000 Robot Trouble was selected (as one of 12 shows out of 60) for staged readings of excerpts at the New Opera and Musical Theatre Initiative's Open Call 2000, sponsored by the North Shore Music Theatre, ASCAP, and Berkelee College of Music.
